Who We Are

Ascension Lutheran Church in Milwaukee is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)

The ELCA is sub-divided into 65 geographical groups called synods. Ascension is part of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the ELCA. We are a diverse congregation, worshipping weekly in English, Hmong, and Spanish. Several times a year, we come together for a unified service in all three languages.

We value the preaching and teaching of God’s Word known most clearly to us in Jesus Christ our Savior. We believe that Jesus came to share life with all people, to offer unconditional love and forgiveness to all, and to challenge us to live as faithful disciples. This joyful life includes prayer and action, especially on behalf of the poor, the lonely, the vulnerable, and the oppressed. Jesus said in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 25:

“As you have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, visited those who are sick and in prison…you have done it to me.”

We celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion each week, led by our pastors.

We are a Reconciling in Christ congregation (RIC) welcoming all, including the LGBTQ+ community. WE WELCOME YOU to come see what Ascension Lutheran Church is all about.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is the largest Lutheran denomination in our nation.

It began in 1988, a merger of three Lutheran denominations. Stated Purpose: “Activate each of us so more people know the way of Jesus and discover community, justice and love.”
